Interview with Jorge García, Norvento’s Program Manager

“Power electronics is becoming the driver for managing energy grids in a sustainable way.”

What has been the biggest challenge in the development of the power electronics converter in this first phase of the project?

From the point of view of the converter design, the first phase has addressed the options of hardware and control topologies, reviewing the current state of the art, and defining requirements that allow us to face the detailed design with guarantees of success.

The conclusions were aimed at making the final solution feasible, industrializable and scalable, meeting the current grid connection and vessel requirements, and having a control platform that will allow us to meet higher demands in the future.

What impact will this innovation have on energy efficiency and sustainability in sectors other than shipping?

Power electronics is becoming – and will become even more so in the future – the driver that will allow us to manage energy grids in an efficient and sustainable manner. In this way, the development we are carrying out has synergies with the railway sector, as it would allow bidirectional energy flows between the catenary and the distribution and transmission network.

Other more usual sectors in the field of generation, such as renewables, wind and photovoltaic, and energy storage or electrolyzers, also have direct synergies with the development of this technology.

How are advanced technologies, such as digitization and intelligent control, being integrated into converter design?

Grid connection requirements are becoming more and more demanding, as they have to ensure the integration of different generation and consumption systems, which are increasingly more powerful, within the power distribution network.

Therefore, having a flexible control platform, based on the latest digitization and control technologies, is essential to ensure system stability. Within the scope of the project, we are also developing a control hw platform, with very high information processing capacity, which will allow us to face future challenges.
