Interview with Adrián Capelán, Technology Director at Norvento TECHnPower

“We want to be pioneers, contribute as soon as possible, and open up the market.”

Fisterra is a milestone in the decarbonization of ports, and no one had previously researched this area. How did you identify that this was a problem that could be addressed by the three entities (Norvento, CTAG, and UVIGO)?

The consumption of fossil fuels in static operations at ports is significant and generates notable worldwide emissions of various gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect. It’s true that this issue hadn’t faced the same pressure as other sectors, like the automotive industry. But now, the European Union’s decarbonization goals demand that we tackle this problem, and in that sense, we want to be pioneers, contribute as soon as possible, and open up the market. Hopefully, other entities will follow our lead because competition is beneficial, and solving the problem is what’s most important.

In this case, none of the three entities had developed solutions for the maritime transport sector. How do you face this challenge, which pushes you out of your usual field of application?

Everything creates synergies, especially in power electronics, which is so present in our daily lives in objects as common as a microwave. Let’s say the knowledge is there, and it just needs to be extrapolated with the right vision and applied correctly to specific sectors.

UVigo is undertaking this task, and while it’s true that they’ve taken on a topic not previously explored, it clearly connects with what they were already doing. As for CTAG, their extensive knowledge in industrialization within such a cutting-edge sector as the automotive industry is invaluable for producing the most efficient product possible.

What does it mean for Norvento to participate in this project?

It’s part of a larger strategic plan linked to our commitment to power electronics. We’ve been marketing equipment for several years now, not with this level of power nor specifically in this sector, but we are clearly betting on this business model, which is the production of systems that modulate power electronically.

This project is a gateway to new power ranges that we aim to introduce into other sectors, such as hydrogen.
